Rehearsing the Revolution

Rehearsing the Revolution
Odai Johnson. Rehearsing the Revolution: Radical Performance, Radical Politics in the English Restoration. U of Delaware Press, 2000.

Rehearsing the Revolution is the story of the radical dark side of English Restoration theater. Using the silenced plays and subversive performances. both in the theater and on the streets of London, it investigates the role that performance played in circulating images of dissent and popularizing the Whig platform during the volatile years of the Exclusion Crisis (1678-82). It argues that the performance and politics of the Exclusion Crisis functioned in many ways as a rehearsal of the Glorious Revolution.
