Drama 490D: Video and Interactive Media for Performance
Monday/Wednesday 3:30-5:20pm
Instructor: Chi-wang Yang
Credits: 3.0
Video and projection have become important creative tools for artists of theater and live performance (plays, operas, puppetry and object theater, dance, installation, experimental/avant-garde works, etc.).
This course explores the integration of video as core creative elements in contemporary performance. Given the multidisciplinary nature of video, it is open to students of various performance-making backgrounds, i.e. actors, designers, directors, musicians, dancers, visual artists, animators.
Through hands-on DIY experiments, case studies, and collaborative projects, students will investigate how video serves as a scenic element, interactive object, and performance partner. Specific topic will include: virtual characters, interactive environments, puppetry, live compositing/collaging of video and performer, and projecting onto various objects and materials in space.
Students will develop a final project demonstrating their unique creative interests. No pre-requisites in performance or video design are necessary, and students with digital media skills will be able to work at a more advanced level.
