MFA in Drama Degree Requirements

The following is a list of general degree requirements by program of study for each Master of Fine Arts program in the School of Drama. Exceptions to the requirements below require approval by the area head for each discipline in coordination with the Graduate Program Advisor

MFA Acting (95 credits total):

Credit-based requirements:

  • 84 credits of acting studio coursework
  • 2 credits of Teaching of Acting in preparation for teaching Drama 251 or 252: Acting to undergraduate students
  • 9 credits of MFA Thesis

Non-credit-based requirements:

  • Perform as a cast-member in School of Drama productions
  • Perform a solo show in the third year of study
  • Completion of the MFA Thesis

MFA Costume/Scenic/ Design (95 credits total):

Credit-based requirements:

  • 62 credits in design theory and craft-related coursework
  • 20 credits of elective coursework, coordinated by the area head
  • 13 credits in production-related coursework

Non-credit-based requirements:

  • Complete a professional internship
  • Write a reflection paper on the design Exit Project in the third year of study

MFA Lighting Design (95 credits total):

Credit-based requirements:

  • 58 credits in design theory and craft-related coursework
  • 22 credits elective coursework, coordinated by the area head
  • 15 credits in production-related coursework

Non-credit-based requirements:

  • Complete a professional internship
  • Write a reflection paper on the design Exit Project in the third year of study

MFA Directing (93 credits total):

Credit-based requirements:

  • 52 credits in directing and performance coursework
  • 13 credits in design coursework
  • 2 credits in Teaching of Acting in preparation for teaching Drama 252: Acting to undergraduate students
  • 17 credits in production
  • 9 credits of MFA Thesis

Non-credit-based requirements:

  • Observation of Drama 251: Acting in preparation for teaching Drama 252: Acting to undergraduate students
  • Attending rehearsals of faculty-directed or guest-directed productions in coordination with area head.
  • Completion of the MFA Thesis
