A Powerful Partnership Between Medicine and Theatre

Physicians-in-training are learning from student actors in an innovative collaboration of the UW Medicine Department of Neurology and the University of Washington’s School of Drama. For more than three years, the partnership has paired neurology residents with drama students who portray patients and clinicians in fictional patient-care scenarios that prepare the doctors for real-life situations.

“Simulation has always been an interest of mine as a very unique form of education for our trainees,” said Dr. Wolfgang Mühlhofer, professor of neurology at the UW School of Medicine.

The simulations are designed to strengthen skills beyond clinical knowledge. Residents practice clinical decision-making that mirrors actual patient encounters.

“We are very systematic about looking at the impact of simulation,” said Mühlhofer. “Over 80% of the residents said that they indeed are drawing from these experiences.”

Drama students also gain valuable experience by applying their performance skills in healthcare settings. Scott Magelssen, professor at UW’s School of Drama, said it helps his students gain deeper insight into patient and provider perspectives.

“It’s very fulfilling. It's a chance to get our students involved. It's a chance for them to make a difference,” Magelssen said.
