PhD in Theatre History and Performance Studies

Overview

We train theatre and performance scholars, preparing our graduates to work at the highest levels of the field as university professors, arts administrators, dramaturgs, and critics.

Our PhD program in Theatre History and Performance Studies trains scholars in theatre and performance historiography, ethnography, and critical theory. Our program embraces a wide definition of performance and emphasizes skills in both archival and field work. We partner seminars and professional tutorials with the doctoral faculty with elective courses offered by affiliate faculty in adjacent disciplines through the Center for Performance Studies. The four-year plan of study offers exposure to a range of skills that allow deep engagement with global theatre and performance traditions from the ancient to the contemporary, from the traditional to the avant-garde, [as well as opportunities for exploration of performance cultures through immersive research practices]. Our small program is distinguished by the individualized attention, teaching opportunities, professionalization, and the support that each student receives, both from faculty and colleagues, during their time here.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet minimum Graduate School admissions requirements. International applicants must meet the minimum TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores outlined under Graduate School English Proficiency Requirements. Preference is given to applicants with MA/MFA degrees and theatre experience but those who hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university are eligible to apply.

NOTE: Application materials submitted after this date may be reviewed but will not receive priority consideration.

Application Requirements

Please submit the following materials via the UW Graduate School application: 

  1. An essay or thesis chapter representative of the applicant's best scholarly work.
  2. A current CV (Curriculum Vitae) of training and experience in your field.
  3. A statement of purpose including educational and professional goals.
  4. Three letters of recommendation.
  5. One set of unofficial transcripts.
  6. Application fee $90
    Applicants may apply for a fee waiver through the Graduate school. 
    PLEASE NOTE: International students (students on an F or J visa) are ineligible for a fee waiver.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores, while required in the past, are under review. They are not required for this year.
