Biography
M.L. Dogg, also known as MuTTT, was born and raised in the Midwest, but has also lived on both coasts. He is an alum of Grinnell College, where he was lucky enough to discover theatre, a passion that has lasted throughout his life. While in college he juggled sound and lighting, with a little carpentry thrown in, and upon graduating he decided to pursue a career in theatre sound.
MuTTT spent a year working at Actors Theatre of Louisville as the Assistant Sound Designer, then moved to New York for the next 21 years. There he developed a career both as a sound designer and technician, working in spaces as varied as small storefronts, rat-infested Off-Off-Broadway venues, and On- and Off-Broadway theatres throughout the city. He worked with avant-garde companies such as the S.I.T.I. Company and the Wooster Group, and traveled the world bringing shows to international arts festivals and other venues. He also worked throughout the regional theatre circuit in the United States, designing both new and classic works.
Over his career, MuTTT has designed for such companies as Swim Pony, Seattle Rep, Williams Project, Intiman Theatre, Alley Theatre, Primary Stages, WAM Theatre, Dorset Theatre Festival, Second Stage Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, WP Theater, New Group, Signature Theatre, New York Stage and Film, Huntington Theatre, American Repertory Theater, Colt Coeur, Playwrights Horizons, Geffen Playhouse, MCC Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, Royal National Theatre, Debate Society, Ars Nova, Pearl Theatre, Public Theater, Milwaukee Rep, Out of Balanz, Shakespeare & Company, and Nicholas Ward Productions. On Broadway, he has designed or co-designed sound for Gutenberg! The Musical!; Here Lies Love; Straight White Men; Oh, Hello On Broadway; and The Pee-wee Herman Show. In 2024 MuTTT was nominated for a Tony award along with his co-designer Cody Spencer for Here Lies Love. They previously won a Lortel award in 2014 for the original production. He has also won a fringeNYC award for Go-Go Kitty, GO!, and is a Drama Desk, IRNE, and IT nominee.
Shortly before the pandemic MuTTT moved to Seattle. He has spent his time living in and getting to know the city, enjoying its diverse neighborhoods, its small-city feel (compared to New York), and its natural beauty. He is a lifelong movie and massive horror fan, and watches more horror movies in a year than all other genres combined. Many a late night has been spent bingeing found-footage horror movies, mostly bad ones. He’s an NPR morning news junkie, and also listens to history, true crime and horror podcasts. He still collects CD’s, primarily movie soundtracks from niche distributors. He is obsessed with Nine Inch Nails, and upcoming in summer 2025 he’ll see them for his 27th, 28th and 29th times. In fall 2022, he adopted a rescue cat, named her Chloe, and spends way too much time looking at cat memes.
