The School of Drama and the College of Arts & Sciences were honored to welcome back award-winning actor, comedian, UW alumnus, and UW Drama Major Joel McHale on December 2, 2025. Known for his work on Community, The Soup, and a wide range of film and television projects, Joel returned to Hutchinson Hall for two conversations —one for all majors, minors, pre-majors, faculty, and staff, and a second with our MFA PATP cohorts.
Facilitated by Drama Professor Chi-wang Yang, Joel spoke about the formative training he received within these walls, why his Drama degree remains one of the most important decisions of his life, and the faculty mentors who made a lasting impact. Hearing him recall voices still with us today, including Scott Hafso and Cathy Madden, created a powerful full-circle moment for our community. His insights, humor, and affection for the School of Drama offered students an honest and generous look into the craft and the path forward.
Students were inspired by his humor, honesty, and clear affection for this place. Hutchinson Hall is still buzzing from his visit, and we are grateful for the time he invested in our community. Joel, you’re always welcome back at UW Drama.
