Auditions for Romeo and Jules will be held Monday January 28 and Tuesday January 29 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and and Wednesday January 30th between 10:00 and 11:00 AM in Hutchinson Hall Room 303 [Click here for a map to Hutchinson Hall]. Please note that this room is up two flights of stairs. If you require an accessible audition space, please contact Geoff Korf at gkorf@uw.edu.

How to audition:

There are two options for auditioning for this show:

  • Sign up for a specific audition timeslot using the sign-up sheet that is posted on the Audition Callboard in the main lobby in Hutchinson Hall. [Click here for a map to Hutchinson Hall]
  • Just show up during one of the drop-in audition windows. These are Monday, January 28th between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Tuesday, January 29th between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, and Wednesday January 30th between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.

If you are not available for any of the audition slots, but would still like to audition, please contact Geoff Korf at gkorf@uw.edu. Do note, however, that participating in a UW Drama mainstage production is a significant time commitment, and evening availability is required. See below for more information regarding rehearsal and performance schedules.

FAQ:

Who can audition? Any student enrolled at the University of Washington can audition.

Do I need to prepare something? You are welcome to prepare material for your audition, but it is not required. The goal will be that each person has the opportunity to audition in a way that will showcase them most effectively.

  • If you choose to prepare a piece, it should be Shakespeare, and no longer than 2 minutes. Any selection from any Shakespeare play or sonnet is fine. You can find all of Shakespeare's plays in the Drama library.
  • If you prefer not to prepare a piece, you will be able to choose a piece of prose from a collection that we will have at auditions. (For example a paragraph from a newspaper, magazine, etc.). There will be other options available as well.

When are callbacks? Callbacks will be held Friday, February 1 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM and Saturday February 2 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Callback lists will be posted on the audition callboard in Hutchinson Hall no later than 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 31st.

What are callbacks? Callback auditions are like a second interview for a job. Typically, callbacks are used to see performers again whom the director is considering casting. Sometimes, callbacks are an opportunity for the director to see actors under consideration for the show working together, so, for example, you may be asked to do a scene from the play with another actor who is also auditioning. Often, callbacks are a time when you will be asked to prepare material from the show. A callback is not a guarantee that you will be cast. Likewise, not getting a callback is not necessarily a guarantee that you will *not* be cast.

What is the time commitment if I get in? The time commitment for participating in a UW Drama mainstage production is significant. Please review the following dates carefully:

Rehearsals are:
February 25 - April 5. There will be a break March 24 - 30. Rehearsals are Monday through Friday evenings, 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM and Saturdays usually 10 AM to 3 PM (Saturday rehearsal times may vary). You may not be called for every rehearsal, but it is ideal if you are available for all rehearsal time slots. We will do our best to work around your schedule conflicts for a limited number of rehearsals, but you must be clear with any such conflicts in advance (during the audition process.)  Rehearsal schedules will be sent out weekly but can change daily and updates will be sent out via email after the previous evenings rehearsal.

Technical rehearsals are:
April 6, 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
April 8 - 12 and 15, evenings (exact times to be determined)
Preview performances April 13 & 16, evenings
All performers must be available for all technical rehearsals and previews

The show runs:
April 17 - 28. Performance times are Wed - Sat at 7:30 PM, and Sun at 2:00 PM. Performers must be available for all performances. Performers typically need to be at the theatre for "call" one to one-and-a-half hours prior to showtime.

Can I get credit for doing this show? Yes, students involved in productions can earn up to 2 VLPA credits on a credit/no-credit basis by registering for Drama 498. For more information on credit, please contact School of Drama Adviser Eloise Boyle at emboyle@uw.edu.
