Last Friday we started this season with a bang on our opening night of Iphigenia and Other Daughters by Ellen McLaughlin. This re-imagined version of the Fall of the House of Atreus packs a punch with strong direction from UW alumna Marya Sea Kaminski, powerful performances by our graduate and undergraduate actors, and stunning design from MFA and BA designers.
Professor Mark Jenkins wrote, "One of the very best shows I've seen in my 25 years at UW! Do yourself a favor and go see this."
Iphigenia and Other Daughters runs this Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm at
the Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theater.

Tonight is our fifth annual Performing Arts Lecture Series featuring presentations by Jesse Oak Taylor from the Department of English, Jason Groves from the Department of Germanics, and Catherine Cole, our new Divisional Dean of the Arts, brought together and curated by School of Drama faculty Scott Magelssen and Stefka Mihaylova.
COLLABORATION. OPPORTUNITY. ENGAGEMENT. What has traditionally been the purview of an education rooted in the arts and humanities is now being claimed by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). If education in STEM majors can cultivate the same skills that the arts and humanities has historically considered their own, and if STEM education can promote social justice as well as or better than the arts and humanities, what is the place of the latter in contemporary academia?
This FREE event is taking place at the Jones Playhouse at 7:30pm. No RSVP necessary, just show up and be part of this emerging conversation about arts in academia.
On Saturday, October 29th School of Drama PATP alum and notable television actor will be coming to the University United Methodist Church to promote his new memoir Thanks for the Money: How to Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be.
"From his long-running stint making fun of pop culture on E!'s The Soup to his starring role in the cult sitcom Community Joel McHale has been making us laugh for over a decade. This fall, he continues the hilarity in his first memoir. Poking fun at himself and his industry in a laugh-out-loud mash-up of a satirical self-help and celebrity tell-all, McHale shares stories of his early love of performance and boyhood injuries, his meeting and stalking of his future wife, his Hollywood breakthrough, and the many on- and off-set antics he's found himself in the middle of since. AsThanks For the Money hits shelves, The University Bookstore is delighted to welcome the Seattle-area native and UW alum back home for this special reading and book signing."

On Thursday, October 20th, the Undergraduate Theater Society kicked off their 20th season with Debate: An Improvised Comedy. Directed by BA student Anders Peterson, this long-form improvisation show is modeled after the presidential debates, where by the end of the performance, the audience is tasked with electing their new leader!
"Finally, a Presidential debate focused on issues real Americans care about. This year, our candidates have solutions for any and all problems facing America, be it phones without headphone jacks or bad Uber drivers. Each solution comes from the heart, because they’re improvised on spot. ‘Debate’ satirizes the pageantry and problems of Presidential debates in a brand new way each night."
