So Far So Good Director's Note

It is my pleasure to say a few words about the process of making So Far So Good and to speak to the amazing talent of my collaborators. Spending the last two months with these human beings, generating and creating material in this strange Zoom land, has been inspiring. I was incredibly nervous entering into Zoom rehearsals. I had fears that the work would not rise to the caliber of in-person work. Luckily, I love it when I’m wrong.

What I have seen from these artists (of which only a small amount is on display in our show) is vital and singular. It is work that could only come from this moment, from these artists, and from this medium. We did not set out to make a COVID play, but we also did not try to deny the moment, or its constraints. So Far So Good is an examination of the present American landscape, of its safety and danger, loneliness and connection, fear and courage, and of letting go and holding on.

In typical times, devised theatre takes a few years before a finished product is presented, and even then it never quite feels completed. The phase the performers have just endured is the first, hyper-generative phase when we throw everything at the wall to see what sticks.

What you are seeing is the beginning. It is what stuck.

In this show, you will see actors finding characters, finding their story, and even sometimes finding their lines. New text will likely be added or edited before each performance. Because this play is living and evolving, you may be left with more questions than answers. Instead of our audience, we would like to invite you to join us as collaborators. Thank you for being with us - welcome!

Thank you also to all of our collaborators on and off the screen. We can’t wait to see this thing grow and change. But for now, So Far So Good.
