As You Like It
by William Shakespeare
directed by Jeffrey Fracé
Through February 19th
Penthouse Theatre
Funny, melancholy, and anything but sentimental, As You Like It is often unfairly branded as a silly pastoral romp. Director Jeffrey Fracé puts that notion soundly to rest, reimagining Shakespeare’s tale of exile and transformation for 1950s America (with a Sci-Fi B-movie twist). Layered with original Americana tunes, this is a pot-stirring rendition of the classic story of Rosalind and Celia, two cousins who run off to the forest to escape convention. Fun, frisky, and sometimes over-the-top, the show reminds us that life is short, so we’d better love one another as best we can, as long as we can.
Join us for our As You Like It UW club dinner on Friday, February 17th from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

Green World in Technicolor
In the second of our Sunday Lobby Talks series, UW Drama PhD candidate Guillaume Tourniaire will discuss Northrup Frye’s Green World concept as it relates to Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Jordan Harrison’s Maple & Vine. Both productions share a fascination with idealized versions of 1950s America. What is it about this particular fantasy that’s so resonant right now? How does Shakespeare deploy the concept of wild escape in As You Like It? And what happens if the dream world turns out to be an illusion? Join us for this brief-but-rich pre-show talk before our final performance of As You Like It.
This pre-show talk is free and open to the public. To purchase tickets for As You Like It, click here.

Foreigner. Woman. Outsider. When Medea abandons her father's house and leaves her homeland, she does so urged on by her love for Jason and his oaths of loyalty to her. When those oaths prove false, love turns to hatred and married bliss turns to bloody revenge. This is the story of what happens when an extraordinary woman finds herself forced to take action against a system which denies her agency based solely on her gender and her nationality. With sentiments that resonate as surprisingly modern and topical in a volatile political climate, Euripides invites us to examine the consequences of a woman, an immigrant, breaking out of the role which a patriarchal society has forced her to play.
