This upper division senior seminar considers ten of the most influential theatre companies of the 20th century. Starting with the Moscow Art Theatre at the opening of the century, to the the course traces the careers and influence of the major pioneering companies who shaped the theatre of the 20th century. We will be looking at the following companies:

  1. Moscow Art Theatre (MAT)
  2. Jacque Copeau and the Vieux Columbier
  3. The Abbey Theatre Company
  4. The Group Theatre / Actor’s Studio
  5. The Berliner Ensemble
  6. The Theatre Workshop
  7. El Teatro Campesino
  8. The Living Theatre
  9. Grotowski’s Polish Laboratory Theatre
  10. Royal Shakespeare Company
