Course Description
Backstage Orientation is an introduction to working in production-related aspects of theatre. It will provide a broad context for students to better understand the coordination of production elements such as scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, and projections with performance. The class will cover common organizational structures of theatre producers along with common terminology, production-related personnel, elements of venue architecture, safety, and other aspects of the “backstage” environment. The course is intended for students majoring or minoring in the School of Drama as well as any other students who are interested in learning about theatre production.
Learning Objectives
- Understanding of structures, terminology, and practices related to theatre production.
- Holistic understanding of the many kinds of roles related to theatre production from Producers and Artistic Directors to artistic, technical, and operations positions.
- Revelation of the complex interconnectedness and interdependency of the various roles and responsibilities in theatre production.
- Awareness and understanding of types of theatrical producing institutions including commercial and not-for-profit entities.
- Understanding of basic principles and practices related to personal and physical safety in production and performance.
- Familiarity with School of Drama performance venues and other facilities related to production.
- Preparing students to work backstage or on-stage by understanding their role in the context of the whole production.
Method
This one-credit class will consist of lectures each week, and some supplemental short readings/videos distributed throughout the quarter. There will two multiple-choice exams over the quarter: a mid-term exam administered in the 4th week of the quarter, and another during finals week.
Zoom
Class will be held remotely over Zoom this quarter. After week 1 classes will require students to sign in with their UW NetID and password prior to joining meetings. This will prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to class sessions held in Zoom.
Grading
Grades will be based upon the two exams in the quarter, each being worth 50 points. All classes will be recorded to accommodate the need for asynchronous learning.
